2018 Golden Globes: The World Needs More Oprah’s
Oprah’s speech at the 75th Annual Golden Globes had the audience of Hollywood’s biggest names in tears, as she delivered her statements on the injustices and inequality women often face in the workplace, in ways everyone wish they could say but never knew quite how.
Prefaced with a highlight tribute reel that would cause Jesus himself to throw up prayers emojis, Oprah ascended the stage to accept her Cecil B. Demille award for her “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment” bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and presented by actress and colleague, Reese Witherspoon. Before she could grace the stage and utter a word, the media and communications mogul was welcomed with endless cheer and applause.
...and then it was magic.
It was Sunday night with Oprah Winfrey.
We’ve known Oprah to have the ‘Midas touch’ but gold drips from her lips just the same as it is encrusted on her finger tips. Every word spoken in the time alotted for her speech was precious; from her adoration of Sidney Poitier to her memorium of Recy Taylor - a victim of sexual assault whose case was led by the late Rosa Parks during the heat of the Civil Rights Movement.
“Time is up!” she chanted in solidarity with the Times Up Now campaign that is dedicated to providing victims of vocational discrimination and harassment with legal representation and advocacy.
“Time is up!” she stated in a strong molasses voice to the victims and women whose voices are being heard through hashtags #metoo.
“Time is up.” she said to a society that has, refused to listen and villify the women of sexual harassment.
Oprah -the young, black girl who saw Sidney Poitier accept his Oscar in 1964 -stood a woman, purposeful, successful, and regal.
She embodied black women - every woman who nurtres, inspires and unites people.
We can only hope Trump was listening.
