Grown-ish Premiers Tonight and Here's Why YOU Should Watch!
Ahhh! College.
Remember filing those applications during your junior year of high school and waiting patiently by the mailbox for at least one letter of acceptance that would have you high tailing out of your small town?
Well, I live in New York City, but still...
Those moments of pure angst, self-deprecation and hope marked the beginning of my adulthood and this is exactly where the story begins for Zoey Johnson (Yara Shahidi). Grown-ish is a spin-off from Kenya Barris' award winning sitcom 'Black-ish' and has a slew of big names as producers - most notably 'Black-ish' leading man Anthony Anderson, Laurence Fishburne, and creator Barris himself!
As we mourn the departure of Freeform's most beloved- The Fosters, Pretty Little Liars, Switched At Birth - I can anticipate the shift in demographics that would continue to give the ABC Studios network added leverage.
So, 2018 seems to be the year of equal representation in film, tv, and theatre and I'm here for it! Especially when the female lead is a young activist who reads James Baldwin and uses her platform to encourage her audience to be more socially aware. Yara Shahidi is the face every young black girl needs to see on television.
Yet, here I am 20-ish, waiting to live vicariously through Zoey because although I did get in to my dream school I went to a community college - circa 2009 economy.
Grown-ish, starring Yara Shahidi, Trevor Jackson and Francia Raisa and Chloe and Halle, premieres tonight on Freeform at 8pm.
